There's been a a lot of recent discussion about 'kick out' switches (or as @ZachLowe_NBA calls them - 'scram' switches) in the NBA. That is, teams switching off the ball to protect their guards from being exposed inside on a mismatch. How does it work? Check out this thread. pic.twitter.com/8APeUIYUSS

Weakside 'bigger' defender takes the roller
...And the 'small' defender is "kicked out' to another 'less dangerous' match up
The easiest way to 'kick out' the 'small' is when the O runs "Roll & Replace" action after the PNR. That is, they lift the opposite big high as the roller dives to the basket. This means the small only has to move a short distance to be 'kicked out'. See here from @paobcgr pic.twitter.com/Cggzw2BsVp
— Coach Liam Flynn (@coachliamflynn) December 21, 2018
Defence switches the Mid PNR

Creator's defender is 'kicked out' to big who replaces high
So what happens if the weak side big doesnt replace high after the PNR? Where does the small go then? Here is an example from @EuroLeague team, @FBBasketbol, where they kick the small out weak side. NB - Kick outs are also called "3 way" or "triple" switching in Europe hoops. pic.twitter.com/IImQXkVVPj
— Coach Liam Flynn (@coachliamflynn) December 21, 2018

So small is kicked out weakside
The player who 'kicks out' the guard doesnt have to be a 'big'. It just needs to be a 'bigger' player than the small. A small forward can kick out the guard if it he is in the vicinity to do so. This can occur in Slot PNRs when the corner is filled. See here by @olympiacosbc pic.twitter.com/pNnRSNbt8C
— Coach Liam Flynn (@coachliamflynn) December 21, 2018

This is one good example to counter it. Here Trez kicks Lou Williams out when Dirk tries to post him, but Powell makes a ghost cut to the rim as soon as Trez leaves him rather than allowing the Clippers to dictate defensively. Now Mavs gets another mismatch they can attack.
"Kick Out" Switch = "Scram" Switch

A Pick and Roll defence that has become increasingly popular in the @ACBCOM is what I call the "Jump Switch". It involves players outside of the PNR, switching hard onto the dribbler as the ball is driven off the screen. See this clip from @valenciabasket explaining the coverage pic.twitter.com/WwHMnUFfgH
— Coach Liam Flynn (@coachliamflynn) February 2, 2019
Guard forces ball into screen

'Nail' defender aggresively 'jump switches' on to the ball
On ball defender switches on to the 'nail' defender's player
Teams using this tactic will mix up their coverage at the point of screen (last clip it was a 'contact' show, this clip its a 'drop') but still use the same aggressive 'jump switch' technqiue as the ball is driven off the pick. When done well, it can really confuse the offence. pic.twitter.com/afgs60eqPx

’Drop’ coverage at the point of the screen

First defender removed from the PNR jump switches on to the ball
On ball defender switches on to the open offensive player
Sometimes teams involve a third defender in the 'jump switch' so it becomes a full rotation. See this example from @OBRADOIROCAB. Again we see a 'quick show' at the point of the screen, a hard 'jump switch' from the 'nail' defender, but this time a rotation from a third defender. pic.twitter.com/eKII4ZEfHq
— Coach Liam Flynn (@coachliamflynn) February 2, 2019

'Nail' defender jump switches on to the ball
Weakside corner rotates to next pass
Original on ball defender "X" to corner
Why use this tactic? 1) it allows screener's D to stay attached to roller so their is no pass for a dunk & no need for weakside tags (opening up the 3pt shot) 2) When D 'jump switches' aggressively at the right angle, and with a guard chasing from behind, its tough to 'pass on'. pic.twitter.com/NhWNniht2Q
— Coach Liam Flynn (@coachliamflynn) February 2, 2019
Tough gap to get this pass through with off defender rushing at ball and on ball defender closing gap from behind
So what are the problems with this style of defence? First up, if the 'nail' defender isn't in place to 'jump switch' hard you can give up a layup right down the middle of the floor as the screener's D is staying glued to his player and not offering help. See here: pic.twitter.com/hFejrh7D6I
— Coach Liam Flynn (@coachliamflynn) February 2, 2019
Secondly, the Jump Switch has to be EARLY, AGGRESIVE and at a STEEP angle (so that they have their full body in the passing lane). If it comes at a 'shallow' or 'flat' angle, the 'pass on' is too easy. See here. (NB, the third weak side defender also has to be ready to rotate!) pic.twitter.com/pwD6fFWRTi
— Coach Liam Flynn (@coachliamflynn) February 2, 2019
’Jump Switch’ is too flat of an angle so 'pass on' is easier
How do teams beat the 'Jump switch'? One method is to use "Cut & Flare" action. The "flare" makes the 'Jump Switch' a longer rotation (both to the ball and recovering back). The 'cut' takes out the jump switchers 'buddy' (third defender) who is there to stunt/rotate if needed pic.twitter.com/ntZPgiwlXF
— Coach Liam Flynn (@coachliamflynn) February 2, 2019
”Cut & Flare” action to take out third defender and make recovery rotations longer
One last point, teams are also use the 'Jump Switch' with off ball screens. Here's @OBRADOIROCAB using it to take away a cutter's advantage he created off a stagger screen. They 'Jump Switch' on to him from corner shooter, and then cutter's D rotates/contests the 'pass on' 3pt. pic.twitter.com/V05KVUtZJd
— Coach Liam Flynn (@coachliamflynn) February 2, 2019
And here again is the 'Cut & Flare' tactic used by the offence against the 'Jump Switch' in the same off ball/stagger screen scenario. {END THREAD} pic.twitter.com/UbyPJZoaz8
— Coach Liam Flynn (@coachliamflynn) February 2, 2019
